Multi-aisled cold storage hall used as timber storage

Prefabricated warehouse for the timber trade

The requirement: To build a hall in a short time in which wood stays dry.

Two tasks were paramount for ZEG: The new hall had to be built quickly, and the timber stored inside absolutely had to remain dry. Due to its enormous economic growth, the timber wholesaler urgently needed more storage space at its Munich location. When a neighboring plot of land became available, the company sought a rapid storage solution that met the specific requirements of storing timber – and opted for a lightweight hall from Herchenbach.

Flexible modular system: TÜV-certified structural analyses are already available for approximately 500 different hall geometries. This saves time and costs compared to individual structural analyses. An extra-wide gate was integrated into the system for ZEG, allowing even large wooden components to be easily brought into the hall (see: The special component).
Ideal for timber storage: The hall was specially configured for the storage requirements of the timber trade through the inclusion of fire protection and moisture protection features (See: Storing timber correctly - Six reasons for lightweight construction).
Quick assembly: From the delivery of the 1600 m² double-aisled hall to the handover of the keys, only ten days passed.

For ZEG's Munich location, Herchenbach constructed a double-aisled warehouse. Each bay is 20 meters wide and 40 meters long. There are no dividing walls between the bays, creating a total storage area of 1,610 square meters.
Since the wood is temperature-resistant, robust trapezoidal metal sheets were installed in the walls of the unheated hall. A special inner liner and a wall base seal provide protection against moisture.

The special component

How a special design simplifies operational processes at ZEG

Imagine a forklift loaded with wooden planks across its entire width, ready to drive through the gate. With a standard gate, the planks would get caught on the walls on either side. ZEG opted for a custom design for the hall, a standard feature offered by Herchenbach.

One of the columns along the long side was removed and its frame removed. This steel structure created an approximately 8-meter-wide opening that can be closed with a roller door.

A column was also removed and its frame removed at the connection between the two bays. This allows the forklift not only to drive into the hall loaded with planks but also to move freely between the bays.

We wanted to build the hall quickly. With lightweight halls, this is very easy thanks to the existing structural calculations. Furthermore, lightweight halls are much more economical than solid construction. And the collaboration with Herchenbach was based on trust and went smoothly. This hall is already the third project we've undertaken together with Herchenbach.

Storing wood: Reasons for temporary buildings

This allows prefabricated halls to be optimally equipped for the timber trade.

The Safe+ cold storage building consists of aluminum profiles with robust trapezoidal sheets integrated into the walls. The building offers weather protection for temperature-insensitive goods.

Protection against external moisture is provided by the wall base sealing, which can also be reinforced with bitumen sheets or liquid plastic if desired.

An inner liner is installed beneath the roofing made of highly tear-resistant industrial PVC. This protects the wood from condensation and moisture, as the water only diffuses outwards.

For a "hard roof" that prevents fire spread, the roof membrane is reinforced with a fiberglass fleece. This makes the roof more resistant to heat and sparks.

The patented smoke and heat exhaust ventilation system (SHEVS) can be integrated into the roof membrane. Certified according to DIN EN 12101-2, one system extracts smoke from a hall area of up to 400 m².

The gates, which are available in different designs, offer theft protection and can also be chosen to be optimally integrated into the operational process.
