SPECK Pumps: Interim storage solution

Quickly create more space with two connecting

SPECK Pumps is a German manufacturer of pump technologies. The company offers innovative solutions for residential and industrial applications as well as for private and municipal swimming pools. In the area of swimming pool pumps, SPECK Pumps has significantly expanded its market leadership in Europe in recent years. This success has made the current location in Neunkirchen am Sand too small. A new building is planned. Groundbreaking is scheduled for 2024, so that the workforce, which will have grown to 350 employees, can begin working there in 2025. The company needs more space now. Therefore, SPECK Pumps has partnered with the company Herchenbach to construct two lightweight warehouses at the current location – as a temporary solution.

  • The prefabricated halls have a short planning time. TÜV-certified structural analyses are already available for 500 hall geometries. This eliminates the need for time-consuming and expensive individual structural analyses.
  • Thanks to the modular construction system, the components are quickly available. Assembly is also possible in a short time. Approximately 1000 m² of hall space can be assembled in about a week.
  • If the halls are no longer needed, they can simply be dismantled and rebuilt elsewhere. This is not only economical but also sustainable. The building components can be reused during reconstruction.

To meet the diverse requirements of the stored goods, SPECK Pumps, in collaboration with Herchenbach, constructed two halls, each with an area of 1500 m². The unheated hall, with its robust trapezoidal sheet metal walls, stores raw materials and plastics that are weather-resistant but not frost-sensitive. For the temperature-sensitive finished products, the second, insulated hall features walls made of insulated panels with excellent thermal transmittance values.

Lightweight halls from Herchenbach
  • Herchenbach constructed two lightweight halls, each 25 m wide and 60 m long, for SPECK Pumps. This created a total of 3,000 m² of additional storage space. The truss spacing of the lightweight halls can be selected between 4 and 5 m, depending on the wind and snow load at the site. This allows for flexible hall lengths to be easily achieved with a given hall width.
  • Both lightweight halls are constructed from the same aluminum profiles. Since the requirements of the stored goods differ, different wall claddings were used in the profiles. The unheated hall has walls made of robust trapezoidal sheet metal. Insulated panels with excellent thermal transmittance values were installed in the insulated hall. Thanks to the modular construction, both wall claddings can be replaced piece by piece, which also simplifies repairs.

SPECK Pumps
  • SPECK Pumps Sales Company, headquartered in Neunkirchen am Sand, Bavaria, has evolved over its more than 100-year history from a family business into the European market leader for swimming pool products
  • The company offers both private and public swimming pool technology, such as circulation pumps, counter-current swimming systems, and filter systems. Domestic and industrial technology are also part of the company's product portfolio.
  • The company headquarters in Neunkirchen am Sand has become too small. A new building is scheduled for completion in 2025. In addition to other locations in Germany, the company is also active in other European countries, as well as in South Africa, the USA, and Australia.

We asked Managing Director Armin Herger

In the field of swimming pool pumps, SPECK Pumps has significantly expanded its market leadership in Europe in recent years. Armin Herger, Managing Director of SPECK Pumps, explains why the company therefore built two prefabricated halls with Herchenbach.

Herger: Innovations in energy saving and the pandemic have led to explosive sales growth at SPECK Pumps. Therefore, a new building will be constructed, with groundbreaking scheduled for 2024. We plan to have 350 employees at the new location by 2025. However, we need more space now. We have been working with our partner Eiffage to find an interim solution.
Herger: We calculated various options and, just for fun, inquired with Herchenbach about the cost of a 3000 m² prefabricated building. It turned out that buying a prefabricated building was cheaper for us than renting one elsewhere. For us, the prefabricated building was the most economical solution.
Herger: Thanks to their construction, the prefabricated halls can be easily dismantled and reassembled at a different location. This gives us the option of continuing to use the halls at the new site. Should we ultimately not need the halls, they can be easily resold.
For us, cost-effectiveness was the decisive factor. But there's another aspect that really impressed me: Herchenbach's reliability in delivering. We had a specific delivery date, which was met precisely. In times of material shortages and supply bottlenecks, that's no small feat.

Aluminum profiles
  • The hall frames are made of durable aluminum profiles. The profile thickness is selected based on the hall size and the prevailing wind and snow loads at the site.
  • During assembly, the profiles are bolted together, not welded. This makes disassembly and reassembly at a new location very easy.
Trapezoidal sheet metal
  • The wall cladding of the unheated hall consists of trapezoidal sheet metal. It is offered in white aluminum as standard. Other RAL colors are available upon request.
  • Trapezoidal metal sheets are economical and require little maintenance. Cold storage buildings thus offer cost-effective weather and theft protection for temperature-insensitive goods.
Insulation panels
  • The insulated wall panels offer excellent thermal transmittance, allowing for energy-efficient heating of the heated hall.
  • The insulated hall not only provides protection from the elements and theft, but also allows for the safe storage of temperature-sensitive goods.
The timeline was precisely defined, but the coordination with Eiffage and SPECK Pumps went perfectly. The exchange was very productive.

Full-service solutions for hall construction

With Herchenbach's lightweight prefabricated buildings, SPECK Pumps quickly and easily created more storage space. This allows the company to operate optimally even with significantly increased demand and bridge the gap until the new company building is completed. The construction of the buildings was simplified because SPECK Pumps also booked additional services from Herchenbach.

  • Building permit application: As a full-service provider, Herchenbach advises on all building law issues and, at the customer's request, handles the coordination with the building authority.
  • Customer service: Even after the handover of the keys, Herchenbach's customer service remains the contact person for all questions relating to the construction of the hall, for example in the case of repairs, but also in the dismantling and conversion of the hall.

Once the new building is completed, SPECK Pumps can simply move the temporary hall to the new location. If the hall is no longer needed, the individual components can be reused in other hall projects using a modular system. It doesn't get more sustainable than that.
