Storage building for fire department

Affordable, quick to assemble, and compliant with council standards – these were the requirements for the new vehicle bay of the Wülfrath fire department. Because the existing vehicle bay was being converted into changing rooms and a storage hall, and the construction of a new fire and rescue station is planned in the medium term, the city of Wülfrath needed a cost-effective temporary facility. A lightweight, prefabricated building was erected in Herchenbach in a short time to serve as a separate vehicle bay. Only a few months passed from the awarding of the contract to the handover of the keys; the actual assembly was completed in just a few days.

Modular Construction

The city of Wülfrath has opted for a particularly economical hall.

  • Lightweight halls are constructed using a modular system. The hall's dimensions are tailored to the size of the vehicles.
  • Aluminum halls offer significantly lower costs than comparable steel halls while maintaining high stability.
  • TÜV-certified structural analyses are already available for numerous hall sizes, suitable for use in all wind and snow load zones in Germany.
  • Unlike steel halls, no expensive and time-consuming individual structural analysis is required.

Insulation
  • To protect the vehicles from freezing, insulated panels were chosen for the wall cladding.
  • These sandwich panels offer excellent thermal conductivity.
  • The gable walls were also insulated with the sandwich panels.
  • Heating the hall is both practical and energy-efficient.
  • The temperature inside is always above freezing.

Fire protection
  • Herchenbach offers highly tear-resistant roof tarpaulins made of industrial-grade PVC for its lightweight halls.
  • An additional layer of fiberglass fleece enhances protection against heat and sparks.
  • This makes the tarpaulin a fire-resistant, "hard roofing" material.
  • It is resistant to heat and sparks and prevents fire from spreading into the hall.

Ground pin anchoring
  • In many cases, lightweight halls can be securely anchored to the ground using ground anchors. A foundation is not necessary.
  • In the case of the Wülfrath fire station, an existing parking lot was used as the building site.
  • Ground anchors were driven into the asphalt surface to secure the anchor plates. The hall profiles are then mounted into these anchor plates.

Fire gates
  • Three sectional doors have been installed on the gable wall instead of wall cladding.
  • Like the entire building, they are insulated and meet the requirements for fire department access doors.
  • To ensure fire trucks don't lose any time in an emergency, roller doors with short response times are installed.
  • Even in the event of a power outage, quick and easy operation must be guaranteed.
  • With a width of 4.75 m and a height of 4.50 m, safe passage for swap body trucks is possible.

Sustainability
  • Herchenbach's lightweight halls are suitable for both long-term and temporary solutions.
  • The halls are certified for a service life of up to 50 years. However, dismantling is quick and easy even before then.
  • With the Herchenbach modular system, 98% of the individual components can be reused.
  • This makes the system halls not only an affordable but also an environmentally friendly and sustainable solution.

Lightweight halls from Herchenbach
  • Herchenbach constructed a lightweight hall for the city of Wülfrath, measuring 15 meters wide and 15 meters long. This created a vehicle storage hall with a floor area of 225 square meters.
  • The lightweight hall consists of bolted aluminum profiles into which insulated wall panels are inserted. One entire gable end is designated for sectional doors, and an additional door is located in the side wall. The hall's roof, made of high-tensile-strength industrial PVC, meets the stringent fire safety requirements.

Wülfrath Fire Station
  • The Wülfrath Fire Department, with its two fire companies, is one of the municipal fire departments in the Mettmann district (North Rhine-Westphalia), but it is not a traditional professional fire department. The approximately 100 active members and 35 members of the youth fire brigade are all volunteers.
  • They are supported by the so-called day shift. These fire service-trained municipal employees ensure the operational readiness of vehicles and equipment and are the first responders between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.
  • The fire station was built at the main location in the town of Wülfrath.

Fire station

Herchenbach offers additional service packages for its lightweight halls, which can be flexibly added to your order. The city of Wülfrath opted for the pre-assembly inspection. This involves examining whether the intended ground is suitable for ground anchoring. Ground anchors are driven into the ground at selected locations, and pull-out tests determine whether the subsoil is sufficiently firm. A soil scan reveals the location of pipes underground.

Throughout the entire process, right up to project handover, a dedicated contact person from Herchenbach's sales team oversees the process. Even after handover, customer service remains available for repairs, as well as for questions regarding hall expansion or dismantling.
